The U.S. cent was actually about the same size as the current dollar coins until 1857 when it was changed to the size it is now.
The U.S. Penny---which actually has an official title of "cent"---is currently the lowest face-value physical currency, equaling one one-hundredth of a dollar. It became the lowest value of currency in 1857, when the half-cent piece was eliminated from circulation.
The one cent piece has been minted since the year 1793! The name of "penny" actually derives from the British coin of the same name, which holds a similar value and place in British currency.
The very first U.S. cent was minted in 1787, it was made of copper, and this coin was known as the Fugio cent, or the Franklin cent. It was actually designed by Benjamin Franklin himself! This very first penny was only minted for the one year, in 1787.
