First released in 1794, starting with the Flowing Hair half dollars. This design wasn't received as well as others because people felt that the portrayal of Lady Liberty on the obverse with her hair loose (meant to portray freedom) just made her look frightened and unkempt.
The 1796-1797 Draped Bust half dollar with small eagle reverse is one of the more popular coins to collect, however, there were only about 3,198 coins minted in those two years, and only an estimated 300-400 survived to today.
After 1797, no half dollars were struck until 1801, which was the Draped Bust with Heraldic Eagle reverse.
Another notable half dollar coin is Adolph A. Weinman's Walking Liberty half dollar. Commonly referred to as the most beautiful silver coin, its design was revived in 1986 when it was used on the obverse of the new American Silver Eagle program.
