Years of Production

1938-Present

The Jefferson nickel, first minted in 1938 and is still the current circulating nickel.  Although it has undergone a number of design changes throughout the years, the subject of the coin is still the 3rd President of the United States, and one of the Founding Fathers, Thomas Jefferson.

The Jefferson nickel was a response to the difficulties striking that the Buffalo nickel had.  The Mint held a competition for the new design of the nickel, and entrant Felix Schlag was announced as the winner, although he was asked to change his reverse design entirely. 

Production of the new Jefferson Nickels began at all three of the Mints on October 3, 1938, and by mid-november about 12 million had been coined and were released into circulation on November 15, 1938.

During the War, nickel was needed for the war effort and the Mint needed to change the composition of the coin.  The composition was changed to 56% copper, 35% silver and 9% manganese.  These part silver nickels were produced between 1942-1945.
